Rummikub is a tile-based game that was invented by Ephraim Hertzano, a Romanian-born Jew, who immigrated to Mandate Palestine in the early 1930s. He hand-made the first sets with his family in the backyard of his home. The game combines elements of rummy and mahjong. Hertzano sold the first sets door-to-door and on a consignment basis at small shops. Over the years, the family licensed it to other countries and it became Israel’s #1 export game. In 1977, it became a bestselling game in the United States. Game play continues until a player has used all of the tiles in the rack, at which point they should call out “Rummikub”, and are declared the winner.
Tournament Format
Players per table - 4
Rounds - 4
Time Control - 60 seconds per turn
Players are asked to download the free 'Rummikub Score Timer' app (Google Play, App Store) to their phones to assist with time-keeping.
Tournament Rules:
The multiplayer tournament rules will be run in accordance to the rules used at the World Championship, with the following exceptions/clarifications:
- #7: 60 seconds per turn, not 40 seconds
- #13: Players are to conduct their own scoring, calling an arbiter if assistance is required.
- #15: MSO organisers reserve the right (not WRC)
- #16: This rule has been deemed ambiguous and is replaced by the following: In the case that all tiles are finished, and no one has won the game, each player will receive one more turn. If nobody has won during this turn, only then all player’s tiles on their rack will be counted (each joker remaining on the rack counts as 100 points). The player with less points on their rack wins the game and the players are ordered according to how many points they have left (the lower, the better).
