MOCHALUNT 2025: A Global Celebration of Abstract Games
MOCHALUNT is a unique and thriving international games league. Its name comes from Esperanto, and in English the acronym stands for the World Championship of Abstract Games for National Teams. Now in its third edition, the competition continues to grow in both scale and ambition, bringing together players and teams from across the globe.
MOCHALUNT is played entirely online, allowing national teams from Asia, Africa, Europe, and the Americas to compete on equal footing. Each team consists of four or more players, with smaller teams allowed to field players on multiple boards—an inclusive rule that has helped encourage participation from emerging nations.

Final Round Highlights
The eighth and final round delivered several memorable moments:
-
Colombia Lúdika redeemed a difficult season by defeating pre-tournament favourites South Korea, finishing in a strong 7th place.
-
Spain overcame Argentina, with both teams achieving their best-ever results (5th and 6th respectively).
-
France defeated Colombia COIN to secure its third bronze medal, while Colombia COIN improved significantly on its 2024 result to finish 4th overall.
-
In the championship match, Germany, having earlier lost to England during the Swiss phase, defeated England in the final to become world champions for the fourth time.
A special mention goes to the match between Poland and Uganda, which stood out for its sportsmanship, responsiveness, and fair play. Despite their lower positions in the standings, both teams approached the match with exemplary professionalism—a spirit that truly embodies what MOCHALUNT is about.

How the Tournament Works
MOCHALUNT runs over the course of a year, with a summer break to align with the Mind Sports Olympiad. The competition consists of eight rounds, roughly one per calendar month. In each round, organisers select four or five diverse abstract games, from which teams choose four to play.
The game selection is one of MOCHALUNT’s great strengths. Alongside classics familiar to MSO players—such as Chess, Go, Twixt, and Lines of Action—the tournament also introduces lesser-known gems like Connect6 and Tumbleweed. The latter was memorably described by Bernd Radmacher as “a game that has always existed, just had to be discovered.” Discovering new and elegant abstract games remains one of MOCHALUNT’s greatest joys.
