Kamisado is an inspiring game of tactics and strategy for two players. The challenge is to reach your opponent’s ‘Home Row’ with just one icon tile. It seems easy at first, but you will soon discover that Kamisado has an unexpected tactical depth The rules are extremely simple : move an icon tile forwards (or diagonally forwards) as far as you like in a straight line. But the colour on which your tile finishes determines which tile your opponent must move on their next turn! The four different levels of play will provide a challenge for any player. Who will be the Grand Master of the icon tiles?
This version was created as a collaboration between Burley Games and Monday to Sunday Games in South Korea. The creation of the icons that are used on the tiles was a joint effort by the two companies. Each icon represents something which is very important in Korean culture and history. A description of each icon is provided at the end of each rulebook.
The Korean name for the game, which is displayed on the box and other components using Korean Caligraphy, means “Strategy under Moonlight”, which mirrors the means underlying the original Kamisado name, meaning “Night Attack”.
Tournament Format
Swiss Pairings, double round matches (ie players play as both colours in each round)
Rounds - 5
Time Control - 15 minutes per player for both games
Tournament Specific Rules
New for 2025 is the use of 'MatchPlay Start Positions'. 36 balanced starting positions are listed in the latest rules booklet. Each round, the player who is to move first draws two of 36 (face down) tiles at random and gives the one with the higher number to his/her opponent. Each number relates to a pre-set start position shown in a chart in the rules booklet.
Also new for 2025 is the removal of the power of movement constraints on the opening moves. Players are not needed to be constrained by making shorter moves during the first three moves of every round (one space for the first move, then three spaces (max) and then five spaces (max)). This starting procedure has now been completely replaced by the new Octagonal Start Position Tiles, that are now provided with every new Kamisado set.
