Mental Calculations Qualifier

£10

The first Mental Calculations World Championship took place in 1997 at the Mind Sports Olympiad. This event is held every year. It consists of a range of different tasks including additions, subtractions, multiplications and divisions, working with fractions, calculation of square, cube & deeper roots, and calculation of weekdays for given dates, plus some surprise miscellaneous tasks. Mental calculation rules are those of standard maths test except that you are only allowed to write down the answer. No calculation devices (including phones, or watches with calculator functions) are permitted in the playing area. It is an event that is run under standard examination conditions.

The championship will run in two stages:

1. Qualifier on Wed 24th of August at 10am in London at JW3:  This exam is open to all. Competitors will be allotted approximately 120 minutes in total to complete a written exam. All competitors will be emailed an invite link to a zoom room. There will then be a practice round to check the technology. Then actual exam link will be provided from a zoom room. Competitors must then do their best to solve the questions and gain as many points in the time provided without any assistance and without using any tools to help calculate. Afterward, at least 4 competitors will be selected to proceed to the finals.

2. Grand Final on Thursday August 25th at 6:45pm : At least top 3 competitors will have been selected to proceed to the grand final. A series of challenges will be presented in a format similar to the 2021 Mental Calculations WC final. Competitors will write down their answers on mini whiteboards and present their answers as quickly as possible.

Further details will be made available in due course. The organizers have the right to make adjustments to this format at any time.
